U.Dance

Overview

Pavilion Dance South West are taking the baton for the U.Dance Regional Platform in 2018, after an impressive display and celebration of the South West’s youth dance community, hosted by Swindon Dance in February 2017.

The regional platform is a special opportunity, bringing together groups of young dancers aged 11-19 yrs (*disabled dancers up to the age of 25 are eligible to apply) from across the South West. The day is an opportunity to be inspired, meet other dancers and perform in front of a regional audience. It is an inclusive and diverse performance opportunity, welcoming all dance styles; urban, contemporary, classical, international styles and many more are encouraged to apply to represent the South West’s ever-growing dance scene!

Following the regional platform in February, Hampshire Youth Dance Company and Undefined Dance Company who are part of Collide Dance from Cornwall were both selected to represent the region at the National Festival in Birmingham in July 2017 and have told us about their U.Dance 2017 journeys.

Being part of U. Dance is an amazing experience for any young dancer. To have our work recognised at a Regional Platform is a real privilege and to be involved in the National U.Dance Festival that showcases excellence in dance from across the country means so much to us. The atmosphere at both the Regional Platform and National Festival is fantastic, you can feel the energy and excitement as soon as you arrive. You can feel a real sense of community and the joy of coming together to celebrate and share our love of dance.

Seeing HYDC perform on stage in such an incredible venue on which many professional companies perform on has to be my highlight. I felt an overwhelming sense of pride not only during their performance but in the moments backstage, seeing their professionalism and the joy in their faces at their achievement when they come off stage. It’s also great observing them in the numerous workshops at the platforms which provide them with the chance to try genres that are out of their comfort zone and that they wouldn’t normally have the chance to try.

The diversity amongst the groups’ performances and in the workshops is enriching and eye opening for any young dancer to witness." - Tory East, Rehearsal Director for HYDC

The dancers from HYDC told us they would recommend U.Dance to “every company”, saying it’s a “perfect experience for everyone” and described how excited they were by the chance to meet other dancers from such a variety of dance backgrounds, including Kathak Dance, House, African and even a performance of Turkish and contemporary dance blended together.

The afro-contemporary fusion workshop was so much fun and really inspiring for me, the use of music and rhythms along with the explosive moment was challenging and something different.” - Rory Clark, HYDC Dancer, aged 13

Pavilion Dance South West are thrilled to be hosting the Regional Platform this time around, especially hearing about the enriching experience these young dancers had

throughout their encounters with U.Dance 2017.

U.Dance allowed us as dancers to not only perform at a beautiful venue but to also experience outstanding performances, inspirational workshops and also an insight into a wide variety of dance careers that are open to us in the near future.” - Olivia Phillips, Undefined Dance Company Dancer, aged 16

The Regional Platform will take place at Pavilion Dance, in Bournemouth in February and precedes the National Festival, and acts as a selection event, to be held on 11-14 July 2018 at Ipswich’s Dance East.

Applications are now open until 5pm on Friday 1 December. All applications will be reviewed by a panel of independent judges and a selection process will take place for the U.Dance Platform on Sunday 25 February 2018. Please download the South West U.Dance Application Form from the link below.
