A new chapter for Pavilion Dance South West

The board and staff of Bournemouth-based national dance development organisation Pavilion Dance South West (PDSW) are preparing to bid farewell to Artistic Director and CEO, Deryck Newland, who will be taking the role of Chief Executive at the Live Theatre Winchester Trust in March 2017.

During the past five years, Deryck Newland has confidently led the organisation’s development as an Arts Council NPO (National Portfolio Organisation) with a significant regional and national role and developing international connections.

Louise Lappin Cook, Director of the Tacchi Morris Arts Centre in Taunton, highlights the impact of Deryck’s work on the region: “You’ve brought such inspiring and visionary leadership to PDSW and real, honest passion and enthusiasm, which has been so infectious. You’ve made a tremendous impact on dance in the South West and we’ve felt very lucky indeed to work with you.”

Under his leadership, PDSW has become firmly embedded in Bournemouth’s cultural landscape, with a flagship venue for contemporary performance and as an important partner of Bournemouth’s award-winning Arts University.

Deryck Newland has led the development of an influential artist support scheme at PDSW, with recipients including Sky Arts Dance Award 2014 winners, Mark Bruce Company, and National Dance Awards 2017 nominees, Protein Dance, and has further strengthened the organisation’s position with several long-term collaborations and projects around regional touring, Parkinson’s Dance and dance for older people.

Pavilion Dance South West is also playing a key role in developing a new national showcasing strategy for British dance.

Deryck leaves behind an impressive legacy in the shape of a well-respected, dynamic and progressive organisation with a clear artistic vision and strategy,” comments Stephen Godsall, Chair of the PDSW Board of Directors. “We are very grateful for his tireless dedication to PDSW and wish him all the best on his onward journey. We are also looking forward to welcoming a new inspirational leader into our PDSW ‘family’.”

The position of Artistic Director and CEO for Pavilion Dance South West is currently being advertised with formal interviews being scheduled for January 2017. For more information visit the website.

I am proud of the way PDSW has developed during my time at the helm and am confident that it is an organisation on the up, making a demonstrable impact locally, regionally and nationally, with real potential and exciting opportunities for future progression too. We have a great board and super leadership and staff team here at PDSW and my leaving creates a brilliant opportunity for a new person.

“I have absolutely loved doing the job and living and working in Bournemouth, a place which also has oodles of exciting potential.” Deryck Newland
