A Poetic Response to Vesalii Icones

We are excited to have a regular reviewer for the autumn season of ‘Thursday Night is Dance Night’. Dave Young is a creative artist, poet, composer and performer, he is pleased to be invited back to PDSW to do poetic reviews for this seasons Dance performances, following a good reception to his poetic responses at the Integrated Dance Summit in May. Here he reviews our Autumn season opener Vesalii Icones:

Vesalii Icones’ By Kokoro and Avant Garde Dance

Music By Sir Peter Maxwell Davies

A Poetic Response By Dave Young

The Performance to open the ‘Thursday night is dance night’ season at Pavilion Dance South West shows that Art and music is timeless to the young and old. ‘Vesalii Icones’ is a fusion of difference. Hip hop meeting Contemporary music played on classical instruments. Free and open to interpretation to the world, the globe. The wild music of man trying to make sense of the boxes, to put them in an order and the order is chaos. Going wild at times, going in and out of the shadows, choosing a cell and waiting. Seeing the patches of light within the boxes waiting for the day that I go. Music that is happy at points creates the scene like mice, scratching and scurrying around the space. Classical instruments playing and breaking rhythm like dub step. Horribly Brilliant. The music was dark but created lighter moods that you could watch as it moved through the muscles of the performer, like when the dancer posed in a headstand on top of the piano like he was for show. The music making moods of fair but with the suspicion of darkness ready to leap out and fill the box. A bed of frustration before the day that I die on the cross.
