Arts by the Sea Open Call for New Commission

Arts by the Sea has launched an application for artists to apply to its 2017 Open Call for Commissions for this year’s autumn event in Bournemouth, October 14 -21.

The 2016 festival was the most successful in its history, with upwards of 100,000 people enjoying unique artistic works across the town. These ranged from sonic sculptures, a Sea of Freaks parade and a fiery waterfront stage show, to dozens of indoor theatre and live music performances. Following the launch of the Open Call for Commissions last year, the scheme has been refined in 2017 to focus on supporting outdoor installation art that makes an impact in Bournemouth’s gardens – particularly after dark. The longer term vision is to transform Bournemouth’s Gardens into a luminous celebration of the UK’s best light art, rivalling other light-based festivals across Europe.

The theme of the 2017 Festival is Plastic Beach.

The synthetic quality of modern life has made its mark on the seas and oceans of the world. Over the last 30 years, millions of tonnes of plastic have entered the oceans. Global production of plastic now stands at 288 million tonnes per year, of which 10% ends up in the ocean. Oil, radioactive waste, chemical sewage and most visibly, plastics—have found their way into our oceans and stomachs of its marine life. From brightly coloured lost Lego, to luminous bottle caps and cigarette lighters—sea pollution gives us a kaledoscopic yet tragic example of humanity’s imprint on the Earth. And yet a new generation of conscious and creative youth has ushered in innovative technologies for cleaning up the seas, signalling hope for the future.

Commission applicants are invited to explore the tensions between civilisation, technology, consumption and nature through the theme ‘Plastic Beach’. Artistic Leader Dr Roxy Robinson said “We are exceptionally lucky to have access to Bournemouth’s iconic heritage gardens for Arts by the Sea festival. With audiences firmly in mind, we’re excited by the potential to grow this strand of artwork and make full use of the wonderful spaces we have available. Make sure you visit the festival on opening evening to catch what promises to be a marvellous mix of premieres and touring work”.
