Big Dance South West 2014

What is Big Dance?

Big Dance (5-13 July 2014) is the UK’s biggest celebration of dance and dancing and a great opportunity to take part in or watch great dance! The finale of the week, the Big Dance Weekend on 12-13 July, is produced and presented by the Foundation for Community Dance, the Greater London Authority and 15 Big Dance Hubs – working with world-class artists, inspiring communities and people. The Giant’s Story

The Giant’s Story is the 2014 Big Dance theme in the SW, using dance to enhance The Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge (SRC). We want to share with 4-11 year olds and their families the incredible myths and legends from near to where they live and inspire them to read more stories. The giant is one that reoccurs across the region and has been chosen as the title for this year’s programme.

The Giant’s Story Big Dance Events 12-13 July

During the Big Dance Weekend, eleven libraries across the region from Falmouth to Havant and in between will be running public dance events to promote the SRC.

Each of the dance leaders came together for two days at Pavilion Dance in Bournemouth to work with Rosie Heafford of Second Hand Dance to come up with ideas and styles to use for this work. Each has gone away to choreograph their own works based on selected myths with local community groups ready to perform for you. Download the full list of live events here >>

The Giant’s Story extended

But the Giant’s Story reaches far beyond the Big Dance Weekend. Led by the SW Association of Childrens & Education Librarians and the Society of Chief Librarians SW, all libraries in the South West will be taking part through an Augmented Reality teaser trailer on posters and by promoting a game and extra information on the website ‘Step into a book’, which will be launched in early July.

The creative team behind the amazing art for the programme are Second Hand Dance and Somerset Film.
