Landance fuse with the awe-inspiring Valley of Stones.

LANDANCE IN 2014

Over Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st September, four free contemporary dance performances will animate the majestic landscape at the Valley of Stones, near Littlebredy, in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Landance, in collaboration with Impermanence Dance Theatre, sound artist Jez Riley French and trumpeter Jim Dvorak, is creating unique, exciting promenade performances where contemporary dance, live music, visual art and sound will fuse with the awe-inspiring landscape of the Valley of Stones. This national nature reserve is a site of special scientific interest, managed by Natural England. Landance makes high quality dance in outstanding landscapes, and aims to emotionally engage audiences through the experience. Landance in 2012 drew 750 audience members across two highly atmospheric performances on the ancient hill fort of Eggardon Hill, as part of the Cultural Olympiad. For Landance in 2012, seven professional and 25 community dancers plus 23 singers took part. This year, with a principal focus on excellence in dance, performances have been created on site at the Valley of Stones, involving collaborations between the artistic director/visual artist, choreographer, sound artist, four professional dancers and two community dancers. Landance projects are intergenerational, incorporating people of a wide range of ages.  One of Landance’s aims is to engage a wide range of people from the surrounding towns and villages in rural areas with live contemporary dance performance in an outstanding landscape, whilst also developing future audiences through schools workshops alongside.

Ella Huhne is Landance’s Artistic Director and a visual artist, who has designed ballet and opera, including costumes for the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden. For Landance in 2014 Ella has collaborated with Impermanence Dance Theatre’s highly skilled professional dancers and choreographers including Josh Ben-Tovim, Roseanna Anderson and Alessandro Marzotto-Levy, trained at Ballet Rambert and working internationally, along with Jez Riley French, a leader in the field of sound art whose commissions include the Tate Modern. Ella says, “Live events in a landscape offer a liberating and life affirming experience, shared with other people we become a part of a larger whole, emphasising the feeling that life goes on despite everything, we leave our immediate worries behind, the beauty, the wind, even the rain, the flight and song of the birds, the sense that people have been here for as long as we can possibly imagine and will still be here… all these sensations widen our appreciation of live performance as well as of our precious landscapes.”The performance areas incorporate differing atmospheres, including far reaching views to the sea, intimate enclosed spaces and an open hillside, culminating in a stage-like space created by an ancient ring of stones. Landance extends the audience’s experience of art and landscape, aiming to widen the appreciation of our precious landscapes and encourages a desire to revisit them and preserve them for future generations. Performances take place at 2pm and 5pm on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st September in the Valley of Stones, Bishops Road, between Portesham and Littlebredy. The nearest postcode is DT3 4EU. Performances are FREE but booking is essential as numbers are limited. To book, please go to www.eventbrite.co.uk and search ‘Landance’. If any tickets remain once the Eventbrite box office has closed these will be available from 07807 052515.
