Meet our new placement student Sadie

Hello, I’m Sadie and for the next 8 months I will be on placement at Pavilion Dance. As a dance student at the University of Surrey, the third year of my four year course means I am able to train professionally on a work placement.

My dance journey began with jazz and rock’n’roll classes when I was young, which involved performing and competing at various events, but my dance training really kicked off when I was in the later stages of primary school and decided to joined Elizabeth McIndoe’s School of Dance, to study ballet. Joining at this age meant I jumped straight into grade 3 so I managed to achieve my Advanced Foundation before moving to Surrey.

Coming from a relatively rural area meant that there weren’t many dance opportunities nearby, but I was also able to attend Saturday jazz and contemporary classes at Swindon Dance. GCSE dance at my secondary school ran with only three of us on the course but I moved to College for sixth form as I was the only pupil at my school who wanted to take Dance as an A level. College was the highlight of my education; I was dancing 25 hours a week, plus Dance Company rehearsals, working with numerous professional dance companies, and having many performance opportunities. It was at college that I decided I would continue my dance pathway at University.

I’d be lying if I said that the University of Surrey was my first choice. None of the Universities that I visited made me really want to go, but in a panic, I applied for them anyway and it was only on results day when I found out that I had been accepted to my first choice I realised that I needed to look for something else, another option. So I drove up to the University of Surrey that day and applied to be accepted through clearing, and I was.

I chose Pavilion Dance South West for my placement for many reasons but in particular, I value and appreciate what they stand for and what they have to offer, to a range of different ages and abilities. From PDSW coming into my University and visiting Pavilion Dance for my interview, I also was under the impression that I would be treated as one of the team and so far, that hasn’t been wrong. I’ve been helping with the planning and undergoing of different events and projects, taking part in the various classes, attending workshops with companies/choreographers at schools, working with the Coast Youth Dance Company, attending meetings and conferences, watching numerous shows and preparation rehearsals. I had the privilege of watching the amazing production of Fagin’s Twist, in the Ocean Theatre here at PDSW, as well as attending school workshops with two members of Avant Garde and observing their rehearsals for the show, which were all amazing experiences!

I want to get as much as I can out of my placement! At the moment, I feel as though I’m still finding my feet and I’m learning more everyday about the organisation and the way it works. As I am unsure what I aspire to do after I complete my degree, I hope my placement at PDSW will further my knowledge in the many options available and give me an idea of what it is I’d like to do in the future.
