This performance was part of our Spring 2018 season
Choreographed by contemporary Kathak icon Aditi Mangaldas, Echoes is a stunning approach to the traditional art form of Kathak. In this piece, both choreographer and performer tell us about the strings that connect us to our ancestors. Aakash Odedra dances across a stage invaded by cascades of bells as a mesmerizing symbol of his resounding ties, offering us a glance into Kathak’s divinity and mysterious ways.
“From the off, Odedra surprises. Instead of wearing the bells on his ankles, and to a plaintive song, he swings them in a circle of light. They ash and glitter as they slice through the beams, thudding as they strike the floor. A cascade of ghungroos dangle in one corner like a glistening waterfall, individual ones snaking across the floor in rivulets of gold”. The Dancing Times I Imagine is an exploration of the dynamism of dance-theatre by embodying three generations of immigrants through masks and acting. The result? An intuitive and humorous story of migration and identity. This piece was co-created with spokenword artist Sabrina Mahfouz whose voice opens the dozens of suitcases piled on stage, thus unveiling heart-felt stories that Aakash’s characters share with us.
“I Imagine is not only a superb piece of dance theatre, but a thought-provoking one, and most definitely one for our time”. The Dancing Times
