You are invited to be a part of the creation process for a new children’s show inspired by The Very Hungry Caterpillar
During the week of the 9th August 2021 we want to welcome young people to dance alongside Ella Mesma Company for their creation period at Pavilion Dance South West.
Ella Mesma Company are a South West (and sometimes Yorkshire) based dance Company, inspired to make work that undoes limiting beliefs and celebrates cultural and social identity to empower and inspire our audiences to dance, to celebrate and to embrace difference. They love to include audience interaction in their work and this is where you come in!!!
We refer to the work we make as diaspora dance theatre because we recognise that the roots of these folkloric dance styles lie in Africa, and that we are also making a new journey, (just as these dances did): taking influence from the past and making sense of them today.
Inspired by the four stages of transformation in the lifecycle of the butterfly, our piece is set in a world between the rainforests of Brazil and the green pastures of Britain. The piece combines Brazilian and British folkloric dance and maypole to explore and celebrate a vast landscape of cultural traditions and music.
11 young people will be invited to be a part of the finale of the show, moving, dancing & weaving a maypole into one long braid.
Rehearsals will take place on Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th August, during the creation week of this special show, with a sharing on Friday 13th August at 3pm in the beautiful Ocean Room studio at Pavilion Dance South West.
Family are invited to join us for the sharing, which will also be filmed. This sharing is for an invited group only & will not be open to members of the public.
No previous dance training is necessary – just a willingness to have fun, be part of a team & help weave some magic!
We are looking for young people aged between 6-12 years old.
Would your child like to join us to help creation this original piece of dance theatre?
