We’ve been extremely busy bringing as much dance activity as we can to our fantastic local pupils and their teachers. As our classrooms, studios & theatres are open for visitors, it’s been a privilege to get everyone moving together again.
We’re delighted to have our venue doors wide open, offering live classes to the public, amazing performances a training ground for new talent & a home for professional dance artists to create new work. We’ve recently celebrated our first live in-theatre production Plastic Paradiso, hosted a nationwide industry showcase for Children & their Grown-Ups & there’s lots more on the horizon! Be sure to check our beautiful Christmas show Where Is Christmas? & the associated workshops.
Sixty Year 2 pupils & their teachers visit Pavilion Dance!
On Thursday 30th September, we were delighted to welcome 60 Year 2 pupils and their teachers from Mudeford Infants Community School to our theatre. The pupils enjoyed a tour of our studios & backstage area (including the very special dressing rooms!) before enjoying a magical performance of Plastic Paradiso, created by local dance artist Claire Benson. Set on a lost island, not so far away from here, which is surrounded by plastic, the children were gripped from beginning to end.
The day before, over 30 children from Early Years enjoyed a special digital screening of Club Origami by choregrapher Takeshi Matsumoto. The children watched as dance, fashion, and live music met the magic of origami, sweeping us up on a spirited and inspiring adventure in a land made purely of paper and play.

“THAT WAS AWESOME! Thank you so much! We played in the snow for a good 20 mins after you left the screen and I think I’ll be finding it hiding in corners of the hall in the Summer!! The children had a wonderful time and it really did make our Christmas party magical – which we all need in our lives right now.” Reception Teacher, December 2020

Capoeira cartwheels into local school
On Monday, Doriana Cellura, Capoeira practitioner/”player” led 2 amazing workshops at Poole High School for Year 10 & Year 11 pupils. Here’s a photo of one of the groups & some lovely feedback from their class teacher:
“Today our year 10 and 11 GCSE Dance students were lucky enough to take part in Capoeira workshops given by Doriana Cellura, a Capoeira teacher and player that linked directly to the study of A Linha Curva, one of our professional set works. We all had a lot of fun, albeit exhausting. Capoeira originates from when African slaves were brought over to work in South America and was devised as a way of practising fighting under the cover of dance and music. It was a real privilege to learn from such an expert. Thanks to Pavilion Dance South West for organising for us, as one of their Dream Learning Associate Schools.” – Belinda Ellicott, Director of Performing Arts at Poole High School

We are thrilled to welcome new primary & secondary schools & colleges to the partnership for this academic year. Would you like to join us?
We’re immensely proud of our partnerships with local schools in BCP & Dorset. Over the years PDSW have loved bringing professional guest dance teachers into schools, working on curated activities, and also welcoming the children as audience members into our theatre, for shows, tours & workshops. Whatever the style of dance or curriculum connections, we’ve got it!
Through the Learning Associates Schools programme we develop long-lasting and deep ties with the schools & look to offer long-term industry level support, whilst having a lot of fun along the way! The role of the arts in education has never been more important and we would like to be there with you to work alongside your pupils, teachers & wider community.
Our Learning Associates Schools are very precious to us and form a significant part of our work with schools, children & young people. We currently have 3 levels of entry: Play, Discover & Dream
We are very fortunate to be able to offer match-funding for our Play membership partners, do get in touch if you’d like to learn more. PDSW are keen to support those schools with high pupil-premium places, free-school meal programmes & champion all children with all learning & access needs.
