Nelly is our Bollywood & Bhangra and Bellydance teacher, running classes on a Tuesday night  from 6pm to 8:30pm.

Tell us about your dance journey: Where did you train? Who were/are your mentors or influencers? What are the significant moments in your career so far?

I started Bellydance and Bollywood in 2002. At the time, I attended a Bellydance class at the then called “Porchester School” with Linda. She was a great dancer and a good teacher too. From then on I wanted to know more, so I trained as an Exercise to Music Fitness Instructor Level 2 (OCR Level) with Premier International and got my certificate in 2006. In the meantime, I trained by distance learning (with video and online support) with A-Z Bellydance with Keti Shariff. It was a significant moment in my career when Pavilion Dance South West asked me to run the Bellydance and Bollywood classes, and I would also include those moments once class finishes and the ladies come to thank me, and say, “I just love your class! It’s so much fun…!”

What inspires you when you put a class programme together? Is it the music, the participants, the ethos of your class or something else?

My inspiration to put choreographies together comes from the music. When I like a particular song or track, I say to myself, “we have to dance to this song!”, and then all the moves come almost naturally inside my head.Sometimes, when the participants say to me, “I am exhausted today”, or “I had such a hectic day”…something inside me snaps and I adapt the class…using uplifting music and fun moves and combinations.

What would it surprise your class to learn about you?

It may surprise my participants that apart from dancing, I love martial arts too, and once I have more time on my hands, I make sure to get more certificates in that subject. I already teach Kick-Boxfit (non-combat) and Tai Chi.

Do you have a class/teaching catchphrase or motto?

Give it ago…and have fun!
