Promoters Call for Participation

7 March 2018

Pavilion Dance South West and partners are bringing together forward-thinking programmers, producers, promoters and managers who are interested in presenting dance performances in theatres, festivals, museums, galleries, and many other unusual places and spaces.

At events held around the country, we are offering a supported opportunity to meet artists and creatively develop new ideas and opportunities for presenting dance.

  • Share/see/hear examples of how to sustain and develop audience relationships
  • Discuss how venues can have early communication with artists about the work they are making.
  • Share your experiences of dance touring and work together to make it better
  • Have frank discussions about what works and what doesn’t
  • Discuss how work can fit in your spaces and places
  • Find out how your venue/ events can support artists to achieve better touring possibilities
  • Consider how can we work together to make sure it all makes sense, for artists, programmers and audiences

What is Surf The Wave?

Surf The Wave is a major dance project that aims to fundamentally change dance touring in the UK. This three-year project runs from October 2017 to August 2020, taking a longer term approach to talent development, networking and showcasing.

Surf The Wave will be delivered in three phases:

  • Artist as Entrepreneur - a strategic programme of talent development and artist support involving artists, producers and promoters (including those new to dance) around the UK.
  • The UK Dance Showcase (16th–19th May 2019), which will have a separate selection process.
  • Surf Generator - A year-long programme of touring and development support to translate interest into tour dates following on from the Showcase.

What is involved?

We are inviting presenters and promoters to attend 2 x 1-day events in their own region as part of the Artist as Entrepreneur intensive programme of development. Whereas artists and producers will attend for two days, presenters and promoters are invited to attend on the second day of each intensive, which will involve opportunities to meet, exchange and develop relationships with artists and companies from all over the UK. The programme will include guest speakers, panel discussions, open space sessions and networking opportunities focusing on four key themes:

 • Concept   • Quality   • Communication   • Sustainability

  • Subsidised delegate places for the UK Dance Showcase in Bournemouth & Poole, 16th – 19th May 2019

Is this for me?

We are inviting expressions of interest to participate in the Surf The Wave Artist as Entrepreneur programme. We would like to hear from presenters who can commit to both dates in their region and work in any of these contexts:

  • New to dance programming and want to know more
  • Programme 1 or 2 dance pieces a year, but would like to do more
  • Programme in any context including small and mid- scale venues, rural touring, museums, galleries, festivals & outdoors
  • Regularly programme dance but want to develop stronger artist and audience relationships

Expression of interest:

If you would like to get involved, please email an expression of interest with brief information about your venue and current dance programme to Eloise Tong, Surf The Wave Coordinator, at

Eighty-five percent of Surf The Wave costs are supported by Arts Council England’s Ambition for Excellence fund, Jerwood Charitable Foundation and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. Further support comes from the National Dance Network, The Place, South East Dance, DanceXchange & Yorkshire Dance.
