Ruby Portus:

A proud Bristolian, Ruby grew up acting with Bristol Old Vic Young Company and dancing with RISE Youth Dance, Kinesis and National Youth Dance Company under the artistic direction of Akram Khan. After graduating with a First Class BA Hons from London Contemporary Dance School, she went on to gain her MA (Distinction) as a dancer with VERVE: Northern School of Contemporary Dance’s postgraduate company. Here, she performed internationally and undertook practice-based research asking how gender affects our use of space.

As a dancer, Ruby has worked with a variety of inspiring artists and companies including Liz Aggiss, Punchdrunk, Sita Ostheimer and Jamaal Burkmar/Extended Play. She also choreographs her own dance theatre work that strives to tackle important sociopolitical issues in a playful way, and has been seen at Sadler’s Wells, Tate Modern and The Place.

Ruby is taking part in Origins 2021 through the kind support of National Youth Dance Company @nydcompany

Toby Gorniak

“I started Street Factory because I knew what it was to feel pain and loneliness, as well as fear and loss. I wanted to help; I wanted to make tomorrow better than today for as many people as possible. Most of all I wanted to help people to understand that they could be good people and part of a strong and secure community, even if that wasn’t what they were born into. I always believed that if we started with the young people, then we would be planting the seeds for our future to blossom into a beautiful collection of colourful and unique beauty.

” Hip Hop saved me, it gave me a sense of hope, self-esteem, and love – by sharing this I know that we  will better the world…I think making a difference in the lives of others is life’s greatest purpose. I walk this path with peace, faith and love, knowing that My Work & The Street Factory community is and will continue to change the world.”- Love & Peace, Toby G MBE

We’re so excited for Origins 2021 and we can’t wait to show everyone what we have been up to the past few months!

Best,

PDSW Team
