Young Choreographers South West is a scheme open to young people aged 18-25 who are passionate about creating dance for performance or participation, who love to be challenged and inspired and to meet internationally renowned choreographers. On Saturday 21 January, we kicked off our latest YCSW weekend.

Participant Daniel Martin shared some thoughts with us after the weekend:

The Young Choreographer South West Residential is one of the biggest and best opportunities I have ever been able to be a part of in dance. For me, it’s quite a life changing experience; my art shows flickers of my life, and my life shines through in my art.

And to be part of a programme that is so laser focused on harnessing your art, I am always left with more questions than answers – Questions about myself and my practice which is the best way to change, ponder and grow.

PDSW has one of the most incredible teams leading these types of programmes, and that is shown through the immense detail that goes into these residencies.

They bring in the absolute best choreographers in the field of Contemporary. Even myself who is heavily influenced in Street Dance, I am still left with a much bigger awareness of myself/my skill set and what I can achieve with this which would have taken me years to decipher and to work out on my own. It’s refreshing to be part of a programme where you are supported and valued as an individual, and I’m extremely lucky to be part of such a brilliant project.

Following a week-long residency at Pavilion Dance, Discovery Artist Richard Chappell also joined us for the YCSW weekend. We met up with Richard beforehand to hear his thoughts on the YCSW platform:
