Pavilion Dance South West to continue as ACE National Portfolio Organisation

Following Arts Council England’s announcement of the 2015-18 range of National Portfolio Organisations (NPOs) this morning, we are delighted that Pavilion Dance South West’s application to continue as an NPO has been successful.

Pavilion Dance South West (PDSW) is the National Dance Development Organisation for the South West of England, supporting dance and related art forms across the region. It aims to champion dance, be a regional hub for specialist dance services, expertise and opportunities, and to offer a programme of local participation and engagement, which acts as a model of best practice regionally and nationally.

It is fantastic news that our application has been successful. I am proud of the whole team here and of the trust that Arts Council England is expressing in us and our work by continuing to invest in us,” says Deryck Newland, Artistic Director of Pavilion Dance South West. “This endorsement comes at a time when the significant development work we have put into building relationships with local, regional and national partners is beginning to bear fruit. We run many collaborative projects across the region and beyond, supporting professional dance makers and practitioners and encouraging excellent dance everywhere and for everyone. PDSW’s vision is a world where everyone lives a healthier and more fulfilled life through dance and examples of our current work include dance in libraries, dance classes for those with Parkinson’s, and opportunities for young people to explore and showcase their creative choreographic potential. We are delighted that so many of our partners have also been successful, some for the first time, and hope that those who haven’t been successful in this round will be able to continue their work with alternative investment and the solidarity and partnership of NPOs.”

PDSW was first incorporated as a company limited by guarantee in July 1996 under the name Dance South West, and was registered as a charity in October 2005, when it was also awarded National Dance Agency status. Until September 2010, its principal role was as the key strategic agency for the South West of England, networking with a larger group of dance development agencies in the region enabling a “joined-up approach” to delivery through working with venues, artists and other partners.

In September 2010, thanks to capital investment of £3.29m by Bournemouth Borough Council, Dance South West was able to launch Pavilion Dance – a new centre of excellence for dance with two dance studios and a well-equipped small-scale theatre. It has excellent backstage and technical facilities and cinema quality screening and projection facilities. Dance South West became an NPO in 2012 and has since changed its legal name to Pavilion Dance South West to reflect both its regional remit and Bournemouth-based venue.
