Who are you and what do you do?
My name is David Lloyd. I’m an Australian born performer who has been working hard to development who I am… I’m still on that path… but have a clear vision of what I want to do… I’m the artistic director of David Lloyd’s Mischief Company and am the choreographer/director of RED. Mischief is a narrative based physical theatre company which explores the darker side of human behaviour in twisted and unexpected ways.
What’s your background?
I’m an Australian who trained at WAAPA in Perth WA, moved to London 10 years ago on a working holiday visa which means I had only 2 years to live and work in UK. I wanted to come to UK to make something of my life and prove to myself I could be in this incredible industry of the Arts as a performer, so I joined Protein Dance and worked with various choreographers in my time Gary Clarke, Finn Walker and finally auditioned for Jasmin Vardimon who sponsored me to continue my work and training. Now a UK citizen I worked for Jasmin for 8 years learning and building my knowledge. I also got the chance to work over 8 years with Neon Dance with Adrienne Hart and various other choreographers. Now after 10 years of performing, it’s time I lived my dream since I was 14 to be a director. I started my own company David Lloyd’s Mischief Company and began working on my first piece RED which has been in the making for over 5 years.
What will you be working on during your time at PDSW?
I will be working on my first full length work RED, exploring the darker side of a classic story – Little Red Riding Hood. Influenced by Dante’s Inferno, we watch as three characters – Red, The Wolf & The Devil – embark on a journey of love, sacrifice and betrayal.
Exploring the relationship between Red and The Wolf, the audience see Red consumed by the forest and take a dark, misleading pathway to Granny’s house. We watch as the relationship descends into animalistic madness of manipulation and control; as lovers take actions into their own hands. But who is real in this fairytale and who has been brought along for the ride?
RED is a daring and dark work that combines physical movement with an electrifying soundscape. RED is an evening of slick movement, bold theatrical imagery & pounding music that absorbs the audiences from the outset!
