Digital Commission – Brooke Milliner

Pavilion Dance Digital is excited to announce our 2022 Digital Commission has been awarded to Brooke Milliner. 

Selected through open call in February 2022, Brooke will create “Swipe Right” – a new interactive Screendance work which will be available to experience later this year. 

Swipe Right is an original, Hip Hop digital dance work that explores the concept of online validation through social media. Bringing together some of the UK’s finest street dancers and circus artists, a beatboxer and a spoken word artist, Swipe Right shines a light on this widely accepted aspect of modern culture, inviting the viewer to make decisions about what happens next to deliver a poignant message to young adults on the cost of digital connection.

About Brooke

Six-time World Hip Hop Champion Brooke Milliner has been one of the leading influences on the international Popping circuit for 15+ years. As one of the top Popping dancers in the world, Brooke is well known for his incredible musicality & intricate choreography, as well as his effortless technical skill.

Brooke is a highly experienced professional dancer & choreographer who has featured in countless stage shows, TV projects, films & commercials, such as: Street Dance 3D (2009), Despicable Me 3 (2017), Olivier Awards (2016) & Old Jamaica commercial (2021). He has extensive accolades under his belt, including representing the UK & winning the World Solo Championships (2017) as well as the World Hip Hop Championships 5 times leading his 2 prestigious crews Prototype & Plague (2005-2017). Under Brooke’s expert guidance & choreographic talent, Prototype are the only UK Street Dance Crew to have won 3 world titles. 

In 2021, Brooke received a commission from Birmingham International Dance Festival to create a brand new screendance film ‘Don’t Play With L(k)nives’, produced by Motion Dance Collective. Receiving its world premiere in June 2021, the film brought together 3 dance artists, award-winning spoken word artist Casey Bailey & a live musician to deliver a poignant message about knife crime in the UK. Brooke choreographed the winning Hip Hop piece for BBC Young Dancer (2019); he featured in BBC Dancing Nation (2021); he was awarded a screendance commission by BBC’s Dance Passion to create short documentary film ‘A Decade Later’ which premiered March 2022; and he is currently embarking on his successful ACE Developing Your Creative Practice grant which will see him enhance his skills in Music Production for Dance. Brooke’s upcoming work includes PSYCHE presented as part of Resolution at The Place on 28 May 2022, in addition to a brand new Hip Hop Theatre show for children commissioned by Artists 4 Artists, Yorkshire Dance, The Place, South East Dance and DanceEast set to premiere in 2023.

Brooke is a role model for Poppers all over the world. Committed to supporting the next generation of dance talent, Brooke set up world-renowned collective Fiya House in 2012 alongside Dickson Mbi. For 10 years, they have provided a platform for dancers to showcase their talent, network with other artists, & promote growth for the UK Hip Hop scene through classes, bespoke training intensives & large-scale international battle events working with partners Team London Bridge, Ugly Duck & Shoreditch Town Hall.
