We have lots of stories to tell this autumn…

Although the weather seems to finally have caught up and we are enjoying some seasonable sunshine, here at PDSW we are already setting our sights on the Autumn. In fact, you may have noticed across our social media accounts that we’ve already slipped into our autumn colours! Don’t get us wrong – we love summer, but our autumn programme is too good to wait around for!

The last season of this year has a very distinct literary theme, with some well-known and much-loved titles getting a contemporary spin…

To kick off the season, Hatch & Scratch returns with three works from Mischief Company, James Finnemore and Felicity Kerr. Mischief delivers a twisted adaption of Little Red Riding Hood in RED, whilst James Finnemore‘s Bloom, which is loosely based on the Southern Reach trilogy explores human beings’ fear of the unknown.

Things will get very Dickensian when Avant Garde Dance Company and The Place bring Fagin’s Twist to Bournemouth on 22 & 23 September. In this contemporary ‘twist’ the piece retells Dickens’ Oliver Twist focuses on the character of Fagin, rather than the titular character of the original novel. Expect a stunning fusion of contemporary dance, hip hop culture, literature and physical theatre.

We’re in for a whale of a tale with Leviathan by James Wilton Dance. A re-imagining of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick; Leviathan follows Captain Ahab on his perilous adventure towards almost certain destruction in an attempt to capture the white whale. The piece feature Wilton’s trademark blend of athletic dance, martial arts, capoeira and partner-work. Be careful what you fish for…

In PDSW Introduces… we will see three new works emerging from the South West, including Richard Chappell’s Burnt Norton which takes T.S. Eliot’s eponymous poem as a point of departure. It combines a personal dance perfromance with a score of piano, cello and Eliot’s own recordings of the poem. Richard is also a Discovery Artist here at Pavilion Dance South West.

The final stop on our literary tour comes in the form of family performance The Adventures of The Little Ghost by Sophie Nüzel. Based on the book of the same name by popular children’s author Ottfried Preussler (The Robber Hotzenplotz, The Little Witch, Krabat and the Sorcerer’s Mill), this show transports you into a world of magic as we follow The Little Ghost on his nightly adventures.
