“Cutest little jailbirds I ever did see. . .” Elvis Presley, Jailhouse Rock

Elvis Legs is a dance piece which was originally created in 1995 as part of a full length show The Featherstonehaughs Go Las Vegas. This show toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe performing in both theatres and festivals. Unusually Elvis Legs came to have an extended life of its own as a dynamo of excitement, danced on the spot and so eminently suitable for cabarets, clubs, pubs and parties. It was noted by the piece’s choreographer, Lea Anderson, that when performed in close proximity to an enthusiastic (and possible refreshed audience), Elvis Legs produced a reaction akin to the response of screaming fans in the presence of the original Elvis Presley.

Elvis Legs was created by the original dancers Frank Bock, Steven Hoggett, Steven Kirkham, Rem Lee, Dan O’Neill and Nicholas Pinnock. Anderson asked them to collect every dance move performed by Elvis in his feature films and string them together to make a dictionary of Elvis moves. This was a lengthy and complicated process, as Elvis was an idiosyncratic mover to say the least.

During the early days of the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, it became apparent to Anderson that an ambitious ensemble project was sorely needed to keep up morale and to employ talented dancers who had overnight found themselves out of work. Together with designer Simon Vincenzi, Anderson conceived of a lockdown/jailhouse version of Elvis Legs, with the dancers rehearsing at home and filming their part on Zoom (the lockdown communication de rigeur).

Only when a Kickstarter campaign successfully raised the £13,000 needed to make the film, (with donations received from nearly 200 supporters from all over the world) did the team realise how truly challenging this process would be.

Following a coordinated effort to dispatch and deliver costumes and set to the dancer’s homes, and with each artist effectively having to take on the roles of performer, technician, sound operator and wardrobe assistant in order to get their section completed, were the team worked together to bring about a version of Anderson’s Elvis Legs, remixed, performed and filmed during 2020’s lockdown.

It is Elvis Legs’ 25th birthday this year. What better way to celebrate!

If you want to know more about the creative process behind this film,  The Elvis Legs (Quarantine Mix) Experience is available to stream over the weekend.
