Hearing Dances: A Digital Experiment by Second Hand Dance

Performance information
9th October 2021
Running time: 45 minutes
Book

Hearing Dances is a digital experiment where you can listen, feel, watch and move – from your own home!

Saturday 9 October 2021

11am & 2pm

For children aged 5-8 & their families, a 45 min live experience over Zoom

Pay-what-you-can. The cut off date for booking is 5pm, Friday 1st Oct so we can post you your boxes in time!

You’re invited to Zoom into our studio and to join Mariana and Keir in an improvised dance with a collection of shimmery, crunchy and popping props. Letting playfulness and exploration lead us, Keir poetically describes Mariana’s movement – or are the tables turned, is Mariana dancing the words?

Either way, swirling, whirling, stamping, balancing and bouncing abound to spark your imagination in this exploration of dance, audio description and foley sound effects.

And the best part? You can join in too!

Each family group will receive a box of props in the post beforehand with different textures to touch and dance with along with Mariana.  The cut off date for booking is 5pm, Friday 1st Oct so we can post you your boxes in time!

BSL and CC will be available.

This event will include lots of different sounds. Nothing will be very loud or surprising, but we will be exploring textured sound. If you’d like to know more – please email lizzy@pdsw.org.uk and we can chat about how this event can work for you.

Particularly suited to:

// children who love dancing

// children who love making sounds

// children who love playing with materials and textures

// families wanting or needing to access art from their home

// families with visually impaired children or adults

More about the work…

Second Hand Dance are exploring the sounds that dance can make with different materials – a foil blanket, balls, paper and bubble wrap. Over Zoom, a dancer will perform an improvised dance for you. The soundtrack for this dance is written by our expert panel of young audio describers (aged 8 – 12) in collaboration with playwright Lucy Hayward. There will also be the chance to try things out for yourselves as we’ll send you a box of materials in the post to explore during the sharing. In this informal work-in-progress sharing you’ll see the results of this stage of the project and help us work out what the next stages might be…

With a huge thanks to all the artists and collaborators who have worked on this stage of the project – Holly Thomas, Lucy Hayward, Jenny Cosgrove, Anna Kaszuba, Keir Patrick, Lauryn Pinard.

And for the wonderful contribution of our young audio describers – James Marsden, Samuel Martin, Katie Forshaw, Amelia Vernicos, Darragh Cassidy, Eliza Webster.

Commissioned by Pavilion Dance South West, made possible by CRF grant from Arts Council England and DCMS.

Lead image description: A large, gold foil blanket is held in front of a person. Their white feet and top of head are peeking out from behind it. The person is stood on a wooden floor in front of a black screen and black curtain. At the very front of the image, this scene is shown through a laptop.
