About the films

A powerful hip-hop dance film with animation, When I Hear Music explores the emotional rollercoaster young people may experience during their first day at high school. Following a cast of young dancers through the school gates to the classroom and playground, the film turns the shared experience of first day nerves into a powerful celebration of unity and creative self-expression. Featuring Deaf dance artist Chris Fonseca (BBC’s Greatest Dancer), When I Hear Music manifests feelings of anxiety as with a tightly choreographed yell of liberation, playing the universal soundtrack for every young person’s experience of being someplace new.

Commissioned by Tandem Works, The Place, DanceEast, South East Dance and Pavilion Dance South West and in partnership with The Spark Arts for Children.
