About One Foot in the Dark

A poetic double bill exploring identity, culture and transformation.

‘One Foot in the Dark’ is a journey through the known and the unknown, told through text and movement.  Step into the space where discomfort meets discovery, challenging long-held norms and old stories from the past to reveal what lies beyond them.

This evocative double bill features Divija's haunting solo, ‘The Skeleton is White’ and the poweful duet with Saili Katebe, ‘Six Degrees from Home’, two intimate, honest works in which the artists confront life's questions and uncertainties, searching for meaning and connection along the way.

Divija Melally & Saili Katebe have been collaborating since 2022, working with movement and poetry to explore common themes of interest and curiosity. They are keen to explore the ways in which movement and language in their various forms can come together to facilitate a creative outlet for the stories that we carry. They are interested in human experiences, interactions, and all the different ways in which “being human” manifests in the world.

The show explores themes of migration, colonialism, displacement and identity.

There will be a Q&A with the artists after the show.

Melally has managed to encapsulate an overwhelmingly huge topic into something beautiful, powerful and cool. The image of Melally’s dancing among a mass of white balls of differing sizes – each movement sending the balls rippling to the edges of the stage – is an enduring one that will stay with me for a long time.
