Another wonderfully uplifting class - suitable for everyone. I had a frantic early morning before class, but my spirit lifted as soon as I boarded my bus to get here! And the class didn't disappoint in any way! Lovely!

Groove to Improve Lower Back Pain research sessions are underway this month (May 2025) at Pavilion Dance studios in partnership with Health Sciences University (HSU), supported by Wessex Health Partners

About Groove to Improve

This free Groove to Improve dance programme is part of a research project which explores new approaches to help manage pain, improve mobility, and boost overall wellbeing for older adults experiencing persistent lower back pain.

We’re currently one-third of the way through this exciting programme (running from May to July 2025), offering three enriching 6-week blocks of weekly 1.5-hour dance classes at our stunning Seafront Studio, with breathtaking views of Bournemouth's golden beaches and iconic pier.

Guided by talented dance artists; Aimee Hobbs and Samantha Gillingham, each class combines creative movement with gentle exercise, drawing inspiration from vibrant imagery and uplifting music. These sessions provide a fantastic opportunity for participants to move with greater confidence, stay active in a welcoming, social environment, and foster lasting exercise habits for the future.

Initially I was concerned that working on the back in a focussed way could lead to injuries on other parts of my body where I've got Osteo-Arthritis, but the teachers guided talked through the 'invitation' to try things, no pressure ~ I've left keen to dance some free-form routines at home in between the classes. So, a brilliant energising first session

With over 100 residents already registering their interest, it’s clear that dance is a popular way to get moving! While the current programme is now fully booked, the overwhelming enthusiasm has sparked exciting thoughts for the future of Groove to Improve.
