News Story

At Pavilion Dance, we believe that the best way to get to know artists is to see them in action. That's why our Visiting Artists programme offers dance artists the time, space, and support to explore their practice on their own terms - whether that's in the studio, in conversation with our creative team, or by connecting with local communities.

This July, we're thrilled to welcome Olivia Wallis Jackson and Vanhulle Dance Theatre as our newest Visiting Artists. Both bring bold, distinctive voices to the world of contemporary dance, and we can't wait to share their journeys with you.

Olivia Wallis Jackson

Olivia Wallis Jackson is a British-German contemporary dancer, choreographer and founder of Premier Dance Theatre. She creates work that is deeply collaborative, physically expressive and emotionally resonant. Her movement language blends technical skill with an explorative edge, shaped by her training at Trinity Laban Conservatoire and early work with Hampshire Youth Dance Company.

In 2024, Olivia launched her company's debut work Stasiland. It was inspired by the real-life stories of individuals living under the Stasi regime in East Germany. Supported by Arts Council England and Thrive at Trinity Laban, Stasiland is a powerful example of her commitment to creating accessible, impactful dance theatre that speaks to communities across the UK and internationally.

During her time with us, Olivia will be developing new ideas for Premier Dance Theatre and continuing to explore how movement and narrative can intersect in meaningful ways. We're delighted to support her in her growing body of work.

Vanhulle Dance Theatre

Vanhulle Dance Theatre was founded in 2013 by Laura Vanhulle and now led by Laura and co-director Oliver Russell. They are known for its explosive fusion of contemporary dance and martial arts. The company creates emotionally rich, highly physical performances that push the boundaries of movement and storytelling. All the while remaining rooted in accessibility, inclusion, and community engagement.

Their recent production of Olive Branch has toured more than 100 times. They've reached over 20,000 people in libraries, village halls, school playgrounds, and outdoor festivals across the UK and beyond. They have a strong focus on bringing dance to those who might not otherwise encounter it. This includes rurally isolated elders, individuals with disabilities, and ESOL communities. Vanhulle Dance Theatre is making bold, beautiful work for everyone.

Currently touring their new duet Orb, the company continues to deliver work that is artistically compelling and socially connected. Their week will offer time for research, reflection, and sharing and we're excited to learn from their innovative, inclusive approach.

Supporting Artistic Growth

Our Visiting Artist programme is open to artists from across England, with each round welcoming one artist from the South West and one from elsewhere in the country, There are no set outcomes, no pressure to produce - just the invitation to discover, experiment, and connect.

We're so proud to welcome Olivia and Vanhulle Dance Theatre this July. We look forward to seeing where their creative journeys take them next.

Stay tuned for behind the scenes updates, possible sharings, and more as our July Visiting Artists take up residence at Pavilion Dance.
