News Story

This month, our Ocean Theatre was alive with energy, pride and celebration as our incredible community cast stepped into the spotlight as part of The Monocle. An amazing sold out production by Rendez-Vous dance presented here at Pavilion Dance.

The Monocle is an unconventional and vibrant dance theatre work inspired by the notorious 1930s Parisian lesbian nightclub of the same name. Choreographed by Mathieu Geffré, the production blends sharp choreography, live jazz and rich storytelling to celebrate queer love, identity and history.

The evening featured a 20-minute interval packed with additional performances, including songs from Imogen Banks and a special community cabaret dance piece.

One of the best shows I've seen in a long time.

At the heart of this unforgettable performance was our phenomenal community cast. Made up of women and those who identify as female from a wide range of backgrounds, ages and abilities, the group brought passion, commitment and joy to the stage. For many, it was an opportunity to step onto a professional stage for the first time. For others, it was a chance to rediscover the joy of performing. For everyone involved, it was a moment to remember.

Led by our fabulous dance teacher Ruby Adams, participants took part in a series of dance workshops in the lead-up to the performance. These workshops created an inclusive and supportive space where participants could build confidence, learn vintage-inspired choreography and connect through movement.

You were all fab to dance with, such a lovely supportive group. I had so much fun. Thank you Ruby for teaching us that, and for all the positivity and encouragement. It's amazing to have somewhere we can come, all different abilities, ages, sizes, backgrounds, and dance just for the joy of it.

We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Rendez-Vous dance for bringing The Monocle to our theatre and to our extraordinary community performers for their commitment and infectious enthusiasm.

Seeing such a full house celebrate a story of freedom, identity and joy and watching our community take their place centre stage was truly something special.
