The Ulverscroft Foundation awards grant for Dorset Blind Association dance classes and an Audio Description theatre upgrade at Pavilion Dance South West
21 May 2025
News Story
Following dance fitness taster classes in our Ocean Theatre for members of the Dorset Blind Association (DBA) working age group, we are delighted to have secured funding from the Ulverscroft Foundation to continue these free, monthly sessions for a further 2 years. The taster classes spread a lot of joy for DBA members rediscovering the benefits of physical fitness.
Led by dance teacher Clare Nichols, the taster sessions got the music pumping and spirits high. These energetic and inclusive sessions, brought fun, laughter and plenty of dance moves to the floor!
I wasn’t sure what to expect, but Clare was brilliant—so patient, fun, and full of energy! It was great to be able to take part in something so active with others who just ‘get it.’ I left feeling amazing! This what our group is all about—trying new things, meeting new people, and having fun together!
Thanks to the generous support of the Ulverscroft Foundation we are delighted to be able to work in partnership with Dorset Blind Association for the next 2 years to bring these free, monthly sessions to their community. To find out more about attending these sessions please contact Dorset Blind Association on 01202 712865 or by email: info@dorsetblind.org.uk
Improved Accessibility with Audio Descriptions
We are also excited to announce that the grant will allow us to update audio description technology which ultimately will enable us to offer a more accessible programme to the Visually Impaired and blind community. The experience to both move in classes and be in the theatre with professional movers results in a more rounded experience of our art form which is often pre-judged as inaccessible to the Visually Impaired and blind community.
