Groove to Improve
Dance designed for people living with persistent low back pain
"Initially I was concerned that working on the back in a focussed way could lead to injuries on other parts of my body where I've got Osteo-Arthritis, but the teachers guided talked through the 'invitation' to try things, no pressure ~ I've left keen to dance some free-form routines at home in between the classes. So, a brilliant energising first session."
Groove to Improve is a dance programme designed for people living with persistent low back pain. The pilot initiative was a collaboration between Pavilion Dance and Health Sciences University (HSU), with initial support from Wessex Health Partners
In Spring 2025, we delivered a 3-month pilot made up of three enriching 6-week blocks of weekly 90-minute dance classes. Held in our beautiful Seafront Studio, the classes welcomed over 50 residents from the BCP area. The programme was informed and fed into research by HSU students and staff to measure the impact of regular dance activity on quality of life.
Guided by skilled dance artists; Aimee Hobbs and Samantha Gillingham, the class combined creative movement with gentle physical activity, using vivid imagery and uplifting music to inspire motion. The sessions offered participants a chance to move with greater confidence, stay active in a supportive social setting and foster sustainable movement habits for everyday life.
Following the pilot we now offer weekly Groove to Improve classes as part of our weekly class programme - see the link below for more information or to join a class.
