New Waves Scratch Night
featuring 4 artists work in development
About New Waves Scratch Night
New Waves is our fresh take on a Scratch Night - a relaxed evening where artists share new dance ideas and invite you to help shape their work. You'll see exciting performances that are still in development, and your feedback will help artists as they continue to create. You don't need any dance experience to take part - just curiosity and a willingness to share what you think. All ticket sale proceeds will be shared directly between the artists to help fund the development of their work.
How the Evening Works
You'll see four short performances, each very different from the next. Afterwards, you'll join small group discussions to share your thoughts with the artists and other audience members. These conversations give the artists valuable insight into how their work is being received. Not to mention, you get a unique behind-the-scenes glimpse into how performances are made.
Meet the Artists
Jayne Port - Finding the Funny Side
Jayne revisits a personal moment that left her wondering: was that funny or not? Blending storytelling, rhythm and movement, she shares the experience from different angles, inviting you to reflect on how we process life's small, awkward (and sometimes amusing) incidents.
Ashur Cali - Family, Connection and tension
Dancers Josie and Phoebe perform a duet blending set choreography with live improvisation. The result is slightly different every time, as they respond to each other in the moment. Exploring family bonds, closeness and conflict, this intimate piece offers a glimpse into the beauty of collaboration and trust between dancers.
Dance Collide - A journey through dementia
Reuben Spencer and Lauren Williams explore the emotional impact of dementia through the story of a couple's lifelong relationship. The piece looks at how illness can reshape identity, love and connection, even before physical loss happens. Moving and personal, this duet invites us to consider how we support those living with dementia, and those who love them.
Karen Jane Parker Geddes - What shoes do I wear now?
Inspired by her own journey into retirement, Karen Jane explores how we see ourselves once our working life ends. Through solos, small groups and a joyful final ensemble, this piece celebrates the chance to rediscover purpose - in this case, through dance.
